DANVERS — The Danvers Conservation Commission closed out the demolition of the old Danvers State Hospital boiler plant, opening the door to a town land purchase. Project manager William Mayer of Niche Engineering told the board crews found unexpected coal ash under an old railroad trestle during remediation, extending the cleanup timeline. Director of Public Works Steve King said the town now has the option to buy the state-owned parcel "for a future asset" once a deed review is complete.
The board also unanimously approved a generator replacement at the Endicott Street pump station, a sand replenishment plan for a Riverside Street beach with conditions requiring low-tide installation, and a minor-project permit for a donor-funded footbridge replacement at Endicott Park, which director of natural resources Christopher Sanborn said is funded by a "generous donation from the Friends of Endicott Park." A separate enforcement case at 86 Elliott Street drew questions over whether proposed three-to-five-foot red maples are large enough to count as true restoration.
